Along with developing awareness of the more subtle effects of asana and pranayama, in this sequence we will also introduce an important element in the practice of japa (mantra repetition).

Japa becomes more and more powerful as we reduce the volume and the movement of the mouth, eventually switching to repeating the mantra mentally. This has to be done gradually as the mind normally operates in an externalised and distracted manner, and the mental "chatter" can easily disrupt the practice of mantra repetition.

For this reason, we can think of japa as having three distinct phases:

Vaikhari: chanting the mantra aloud Upanshu: gently moving the lips and mouth (and therefore still using the faculty of speech) but not producing any audible sound Manasika: repeating the mantra mentally. As a general rule, we should start the practice by repeating the mantra aloud. As we progress, we can start with stage 2 (Upanshu) when at the beginning of our practice the mind is relatively calm, and gradually move into stage 3 (Manasika), then reverting to stage 2 when mental activity increases so much that purely mental repetition becomes difficult.

At all times, we should not try to suppress any thoughts that arise during the practice. Instead, we develop a witnessing awareness and hold on to the mantra as a kind of mental "rope", keeping on repeating it regardless of anything else that may be happening in the mind.

This will bring us to the priceless experience of one of the fundamental tenets of yoga: I am not the mind. Only when we can observe our own minds as if from the position of an external observer, will we be able to change and improve its functioning and let go of unhelpful mental processes that create discomfort for ourselves.

In this way, japa becomes a powerful tool for mental and emotional management that will translate into an improved experience of life.
